Visiting the Fortress

Santa Catarina Island offers much more than beautiful nature and beaches. Florianópolis was founded in 1673 by Portuguese colonizers, it is more than 350 years of history. Part of this history can be observed in several see sights throughout the city, such as the Nossa Senhora do Desterro e Santa Catarina de Alexandria Metropolitan Cathedral, the iron bridge Hercílio Luz, the Public Market, the  Santo Antônio de Lisboa district, where you can find the first cobbled street in the State of Santa Catarina and the fortresses of the island.

The fortresses were built to protect the island, and the country, from pirates and enemy attacks. One of them, the São José da Ponta Grossa Fortress is located in the north of the island and nowadays is administrated by UFSC. The fortress holds canyons, big stone walls, a small chapel, and a wonderful overview of the sea.

The InterPore Brazil 2025 organizing committee invites the conference attendants to visit São José da Ponta Grossa Fortress on the previous Sunday (10th August) right before the beginning of the conference on 11th August. Besides visiting the fortress, it is planned to make a stop at Santo Antônio de Lisboa district for the participants to have a good time.

The instructions to book a place on the trip will be available soon.
